The West Coast premiere of David Henry Hwang's hit comedy play Chinglish was held at Berkeley Rep. As lead graphic designer for this show, I was able to talk to Mr. Hwang about what he was looking for in this new artwork and learn more about how this production is different from the original Broadway production. Although the name of the show almost calls for the artwork to be written in bad English, the themes and tone of the play didn't ask for it to be so obvious. I was inspired by Chinese block stamps, and with the governmental overtones of the play, it made sense to feature the flags of the two countries in the artwork.
Fun fact: When this production of Chinglish went on tour to Hong Kong after its run in Berkeley, the theater festival designers imitated my look for their poster!
